Updates

5 days since my last update and a lot of things have happened.

  1. I lost my phone. Again. To quote myself in one of my tweets:
  2. It fell from my pocket as I was entering one of the cinemas in Trinoma. Losing a phone has got to be one of the most devastating and trivial feelings in the world. :( This is the second phone I’ve lost within the span of 2 months!
  3. Now I’m stuck using this:

Nokia 6230! I’ve had this thing since high school. And yes, that is a picture of my parents as my wallpaper.
  4. I loved Toy Story 3. Which was the movie I was watched after the phone incident. I actually didn’t think much about losing my phone while I was watching, it was that awesome. :3
  5. My first choice for thesis topic got approved! It is a dormitory for varsity students. There are 11 of us who chose to work on something CHK-related, so we all got grouped together. This is gonna be so much fun. Of course, I say that now, while there isn’t much to be done yet.

So what is new with you, people who follow me?

I’m all thesis’d out for the day. I returned 1 overdue book this morning, but I forgot to scan some important pages. UGH. This is one of the precedents I got from the book, the Crystal Palace Hostel. It’s hexagonal and has a central staircase. It seems pretty cool in the book I borrowed, dated 1971. I’ll tell you guys more about it when my brain cells recover.

#15. A parti is the central idea or concept of a building.
A parti [par-TEE] can be expressed several ways but is most often expressed by a diagram depicting the general floor plan organization of a building and, by implication, its experiential and aesthetic sensibility. A parti diagram can describe massing, entrance, spatial hierarchy, site relationship, core location, interior circulation, public/private zoning, solidity/transparency, and many other concerns. The proportion of attention given to each factor varies from project to project.
The partis shown here are from previously conceived projects; it is unlikely, if not impossible, to successfully carry a parti from an old project to a new project. The design process is the struggle to create a uniquely appropriate parti for a project.
Some will argue that an ideal parti is wholly inclusive—that it informs every aspect of a building from its overall configuration and structural system to the shape of the doorknobs. Others believe that a perfect parti is neither attainable nor desirable.

Note to self Thesis for real

This is the Youth Center and Sports Complex Saint-Cloud, located someplace in France. To accommodate two autonomous programs on a narrow plot of land, KOZ superimposed the two programs without isolating them, by creating visual links between activities and applying the same principles on all facades and in all spaces.
The spaces communicate via visual glimpses: you see each other on all sides, you ‘feel’ each other, you can easily find your bearings in a building with a spatially fluid but unfamiliar layout. Nevertheless, the functional and administrative autonomy of the two activities (separate entrances and different operational timetables) is respected.

So much pretty Color Thesis for real

MOPping Up: A Design and Advertising Campaign for Manila Ocean ParkDesign
After seeing Mabel’s thesis poster on my dashboard, I remembered I hadn’t included my thesis here in my online portfolio. Now that I think about it, I never really put much of my thesis on the internet because I was worried my ideas would be stolen and put to use without my consent or anything. HAHAHA. But my thesis is officially under copyright law, so I guess it’s okay now.
ANYWAY. My thesis was basically to redesign Manila Ocean Park’s visual communication materials. It was something like rebranding. I changed the logo, came up with a new tagline and everything. I guess part of the reason why I stuck with Ocean Park was because I’ve always had this not-so-unspoken love for marine animals. I’m a bit of a fish geek. I visited the place a few times to gather info and material for my paper.
I redesigned almost everything, and designed some things the park never had. I went from logo to the tickets to the signage, all the way to new ideas like a map, a guide booklet, new souvenirs and even an installation. It was insane how many things I had to come up with. Of course, this poster does not do justice to everything I’ve worked on.
But in the end, everything looked great, and I even got awarded Best Thesis for Campaigns on opening night of our exhibit! That’s honestly one of my biggest accomplishments, really. Yeeeaaaah.

All the time spent working on thesis was really worth it. All those times I had spent at Coffee Bean near my house working alone, giving out survey forms, attempting an interview which was pretty useless, thinking up clever things to make my thesis awesome and executing, and then just putting everything together for that final defense, it gave me a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment once it was all over and all that was left for us seniors was to put up the exhibit and graduate.
I honestly can’t help but feel glad every time I remember working so hard on something like this. All those hours in front of my laptop, sitting either in the library or in a coffee shop was worth the months of brain racking.
I cannot say, though, that I was able to complete my thesis by myself. I really have a lot of people to thank! My family and friends who’ve been extra supportive and not to mention helpful, my school mates who also helped me out despite having their own theses to worry about, my best friend who was always there for me when I was panicking and supporting me in my worst times, my professors who also helped me out by giving me their opinions…you are all awesome people! :D
Hmm…now that I’ve posted my thesis poster online, it kind of feels nice looking at it on the internet. But of course it’s best seeing the actual printed materials. Dad locked them away in their treasure chest, though. LOL.

Wow! Everything looks great, Tracy. Ang saya ng thesis mo! I hope my thesis outputs can be as fruitful and love-borne as yours. :)
